Probiotics For Adults

Probiotics for adults

Enhanced immune health all through adult life

Our bodies carry us through different stages of life. There is a growing awareness to help our bodies in their fight against disease, aging, and stress. We need our bodies to stay strong for us, especially with all that we put them through, with travel, dietary and lifestyle changes.

There are many occasions in our daily life where our gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota and immune system is challenged. Weekdays are filled with the stress of getting to school and work in time, staying focused in traffic, performing professionally, preparing dinner for family and finally also trying to find some time for relaxation and exercise.

A challenged microbiota due to stress may lead to dysbiosis and overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria. This in turn can increase the risk of several dysfunctions, both gastro and immune related. Since more than 70% of the immune system is regulated by the GI-tract, a well-nourished and diverse microbiota is of utmost importance.

The gastro-related symptoms can be increased permeability of the intestinal wall, whereas the immune symptoms may be either an up or down-regulation of the immune system. Up-regulation may cause allergies while down-regulation could make us more prone to catching infections.

A well-balanced microbiota can aid in increasing the thickness of the mucus layer covering the inside of the intestine, especially by fermenting dietary fibers to short chain fatty acids (SCFA). The SCFA act as an energy source for the cells lining the intestinal wall, which promotes the secretion of mucus. SCFA also act as energy to other beneficial bacterial populations in the gut, thereby promoting diversity.

By adding well-characterized and clinically documented probiotics, the efficacy of the immune system can be enhanced. Lactobacillus paracasei 13434 is suitable for everyone; from the growing adolescent and all through adult life. It promotes a balanced and well-nourished microbiota, and enhances the immune system.

Short facts

Figure 1. Lactobacillus paracasei DSM 13434 is a clinically supported probiotic bacteria shown to survive passage through the GI tract and attach to intestinal cells (a) and reduce gut permiability (b) support a healthy immune system (c)resulting in a well-balanced and healthy GI environment

Benefits of Lactobacillus paracasei 6595:

  1. Survives the passage through the GI-tract and attaches to intestinal cells1
    – main criterion to be active in the intestine
  2. Reduces gut permeability and translocation 8
  3. Supports a healthy immune system 2
  4. Degrades dietary fibers to SCFAs, providing nutrients to intestinal cells and to other beneficial bacteria 3-4

Supporting preclinical and clinical studies

Lactobacillus paracasei DSM 13434 has in a clinical study been shown to possess strong anti-microbial activity against pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella spp., Helicobacter pylori, Shigella spp. and Escherichia coli 5

The anti-inflammatory activity of L. paracasei 13434 has been studied in two preclinical studies. In an osteoporosis-model, reduced levels of the pro-inflammatory peptides TNF-α and IL-1β was seen after 6 weeks of treatment 6. The other study was a model for multiple sclerosis, where the results showed delayed onset of clinical symptoms due to increased anti-inflammatory properties 7.

L. paracasei 13434 has also been shown to reduce translocation of total bacterial content and especially of Enterobacteriaceae spp. in a model of colitis8 (Figure 2)

The clinical effect on the immune system was investigated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled and randomized study, where L. paracasei 13434 was supplemented daily for two weeks 2. The results showed that L. paracasei 13434 affect several immune parameters, such as inducing IL-12 and Natural-killer T-cells (NKT-cells). It also enhanced the phagocytic activity, acting as a first-line defense function of the immune system against infectious diseases. The NKT-cells are important for the regulation of the immune-responses, and act primarily by further activation of other immune cells through the secretion of cytokines.

Another clinical study investigated the combination of L. paracasei 13434, L. fermentum and Bifidobacterium longum, to see effect of antioxidative capacity in persons infected with Helicobacter pylori 5. The results was an increased antioxidative capacity in the active group (Figure 3).

The conclusion from both previous described clinical studies are that supplementation of L. paracasei 13434 promotes a fast immune response when needed, and maintains a strong immune system over time.
